MARCH made light contact with COMPETITIVE EDGE as the feld was sent off and running, was quickly guided over to the rail, rode it for over a half, slipped into the two path approaching the five-sixteenths marker, completed the rest of the way to the top of the lane and then got set down, launched a rally in earnest with clear sailing up ahead, got engaged in a duel with the second place finisher, went at it eye to eye with that opponent in the final sixteenth, forged to the slimmest of leads in the final stages and dug in gamely to stay in front. CINCO CHARLIE broke alertly and remained a forward factor, was coaxed in the two path keeping READY FOR RYE company, continued to race linked up to that foe on the turn, followed that one outward as they neared the top of the lane, swung four wide into the stretch, fought his way to a narrow advantage, got pounced upon by the top one, raced directly alongside that rival the rest of the way to the wire, got denied. READY FOR RYE was rated along the inside vying for command, drifted into the three path turning for home, yielded soon afterwards, weakened into the show slot. CLASSY CLASS well held racing down the backstretch, chased the pace from the four path on the turn, commenced the stretch one wider, lacked the needed response. TWO WEEKS OFF stalked the pace from the two path for most of the way to the five-sixteenths pole, flip-flopped with the winner at that juncture by getting placed onto the rail, was put to solid encouragement cutting the corner into the stretch, failed to slip past foes and gave way. COMPETITIVE EDGE brushed at the start, was lightly hand urged to come within range of the front runners, departed the backstretch from the three path, arrived at the quarter pole appearng to have litttle left and retreated.

WAR DANCER established the front shortly after the start and showed the way in hand just off the hedge in the two path while attended in close aim by LEGENDARY (GB) to the outside, marshaled the field the down backside, the rider's head on swivel seemingly intent on keeping TWILIGHT ECLIPSE bottled up in behind his cover, came under light coaxing into the far turn before being put to further urging with five-sixteenths to go, spun two to three wide at the quarter pole digging in under challenge, yielded narrow command a furlong from home before weakening in the late stages. TWILIGHT ECLIPSE just off the inside in aim of the front behind the cover of WAR DANCER, who at junctures down the backside seemed intent on keeping his rival there, moved to go inside into the far turn and remained in behind through that bend coming under coaxing at the five-sixteenths when gaining some clearance, swung three wide into upper stretch roused and offered no response. HYPER, just off the pace tracking inside, came under encouragement with five-sixteenths to run, spun just off the inside for home, ran on along the hedge in striking distance to the furlong grounds before weakening late on. AMERICAN PHAROAH broke on top after coming away in good order, quickly shook free, was glided over to the rail before reaching the beginning of the clubhouse turn, rated kindly setting the splits on a loosely-contested lead, began to edge away from the closest pursuers approaching the quarter pole, settled into the upper stretch and was given his cue, responded and drew well clear to cap off the first Triple Crown in thirty seven years. FROSTED took up position in the middle of the field, sat reserved in the two path until the end of the backstretch between rivals for a good portion of the way to that station, got placed onto the inside after MUBTAAHIJ (IRE) moved outward, was kept on hold, angled outward spinning into the stretch but proved no match. KEEN ICE raced three to four wide to the quarter pole, swung into the five path heading into the stretch, rallied well enough to be along for the show. MUBTAAHIJ (IRE) tracked the winner sitting loosely pocketed, tipped into two path in the vicinity of the half mile pole, stayed within range of the leader to the top of the lane before backing away. FRAMMENTO cut over to the rail shortly after the start, lacked early speed, picked up interest when asked and moved into contention with a rail run on the far turn, came four wide into the stretch already set down to strong urging, made no headway. MADEFROMLUCKY three wide on the opening bend, was strung out in the four path on the subsequent turn, got put to a prolonged drive, failed to make up ground, ducked inward after entering the stretch and tired. TALE OF VERVE was primarily in the two path to the quarter pole, failed to respond when asked after departing the backstretch, moved to the rail to cut the corner into the lane and retreated. MATERIALITY, strung out three wide on the opening turn, attended the winner closer to the rail proceeding down the backstretch, shifted again three wide around the second turn, had little left by the top of the lane and faded.

FLASHLIGHT (IRE) showed the way in hand along the hedge under attendance to the outside by HOLY INVADER, remained patiently handled until nearing the quarter pole, got let out swinging just off the inside for home, inched away under a drive to the furlong grounds, dug in coming under threat near the sixteenth pole, fought on head to head inside gamely to the wire but was nailed in the last strides. TAGHLEEB saved ground in mid pack behind cover, came under light coaxing three furlongs from home, angled out to be six wide into upper stretch out of cover and into daylight, kicked on belatedly through the final eighth to procure the show honors. SHKSPEARE SHALIYAH bumped at the start by POWERFUL INSTINCT breaking inwards, saved ground near the rear, got ridden along midway on the far turn, spun just off the inside into upper stretch, offered up a mild rail rally for the last major share. HOLY INVADER three wide through the first turn, attended the pace just off the inside, came under urging with five-sixteenths to run, spun four wide for home, weakened in the late stages. POWERFUL INSTINCT broke in at the start bumping SHKSPEARE SHALIYAH, settled just off the inside in mid pack until shifted three to four wide three furlongs out nudging OCALA JIM five wide at that station, spun five wide himself into upper stretch and made no headway. OCALA JIM broke in at the start and was corrected, raced three wide through the first turn and settled three to four wide in mid pack, got nudged five wide when put to encouragement three furlongs out as POWERFUL INSTINCT shifted from the two path to the four path at that station and tired. COLTIMUS PRIME bumped at the start by the aforementioned foe, settled just off the pace three to four wide, came under urging midway on the far turn before continuing four wide into upper stretch and tired.

GREEN GRATTO gained the advantage shortly after the start, showed the way, rated from the inside and facing some but not stiff pressure, continued along under those conditions all the way to the quarter pole, get let out for the drive, left the eighth pole holding its biggest advantage, held on well late to stay comfortably in the clear. DON DULCE took up the chase from the two path on the turn, angled slighter wider into the stretch, came home with good energy to garner the place. TAKAJO underwent a four wide pursuit on the turn, fanned out into the six path during the opening phases of the drive, kicked into its best stride once straightened away and finished more than willingly to take the show award. SOCIAL INCLUSION broke out slightly but enough to make sone contact with MATTERHORN, sat forwardly placed in the three path, flattened out in the last eighth. WARRIOR'S CROWN kept an eye on the winner from a slight distance off the rail, was put to encouragement spinning four wide into the stretch, made a steady gain without ever posing a serious threat. SECOND CITY three wide at the three-eighths pole, rallied belatedly. BIG LOOIE stalked the winner from the two path, gave way. LIFE IN SHAMBLES unhurried in the two path for over a half, got placed five wide at the top of the lane, had no offering. SPA CITY FEVER quickly put onto the inside route, failed to menace. MATTERHORN away a bit awkwardly with its initial step, was set to some hand urging after being slow to settle into stride, was strung out on the overland route, failed to reach a contending position.
