Free Selections: Iowa Derby Night 2026 / Prairie Meadows

Nothing beats stakes racing under the lights. Altoona, Iowa takes center stage this Saturday night for the Iowa Derby card at Prairie Meadows, and this card has served up some excellent betting opportunities over the years.

These are my own plays, one horseplayer's opinions. For the full AI read on every horse, color-coded by tier, grab your WinningPonies E-Z Win Form before you head to the windows. Mine ride alongside it, not instead of it.

Race 5: The $100,000 Prairie Gold Juvenile (5 1/2f, 8:51pm ET)

#6 Icebreak. Speedy son of Twirling Candy for the Tim Hamm barn. He exits a maiden win at Churchill Downs and sports a very sharp work on the 4th of July. He should break fresh under Rocco Bowen and either take the lead or sit right off the leaders' heels. He is moving up in class, but Hamm would not have made the trip thinking he wasn't ready for a top-notch effort. Rider and trainer win 20% as a team, and off a last-race maiden score the barn wins next out at 18%.

Race 6: The $100,000 Iowa Sprint (6f, 9:22pm ET)

#4 Nakatomi. Son of Firing Line for Wesley Ward and up-and-coming rider Yedsit Hazelwood. He comes off a three-month break from Meydan and should appreciate the class relief. Ward knows how to bring a runner along after a break, and the works at Keeneland show readiness to me. He fires well off the bench, and Hazelwood is a next-generation rider we will be watching down the road.

Race 7: The $250,000 Iowa Derby (1 1/16, 9:53pm ET)

#5 Desert Gate. Son of Omaha Beach for Bob Baffert with Florent Geroux in the saddle. Beaten favorite in the G3 Ohio Derby, he drops down in class, and this speedster should enjoy the shorter distance. Flo does very well at Prairie Meadows and always comes for the winner's circle. Baffert wins 31% with beaten chalk on the return. Catch him if you can at the top of the lane.

Race 8: The G3 Cornhusker (1 1/8, 10:24pm ET)

#5 San Siro. Son of Classic Empire for Brendan Walsh with Florent Geroux in the saddle. He comes off a 57-day layoff and has some efforts over the deep Churchill strip. A solid closer who has faced better, he cuts back from 1 3/16 in the Pimlico Special. Geroux wins 20% with route runners and should be in the right spot turning for home.

Best of luck and enjoy your weekend! - Ed
