Kentucky Oaks 2026 Preview: Contenders, Storylines, and What to Watch

The 2026 Kentucky Oaks runs Friday, May 1 at Churchill Downs. The field looks competitive rather than dominated by one barn: a market favorite from California, an Ashland winner from the Keeneland prep, a Churchill Downs-experienced tactical speed horse, and a Bob Baffert filly who's won four of seven career starts. There's no Brad-Cox-trio macro story like the Derby, which usually means the race sets up as one of the better-value betting races on the weekend.

The Race at a Glance

  • Date: Friday, May 1, 2026
  • Track: Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky
  • Distance: 1⅛ miles on dirt
  • Purse: $1.5 million
  • Field: Up to 14 three-year-old fillies
  • Post draw: Saturday, April 25 at approximately 2:15 PM Eastern (same ceremony as the Derby draw)
  • Post time: Late afternoon Eastern on Friday

The Market Favorite: Meaning

Meaning (Michael McCarthy) leads the Road to the Kentucky Oaks points standings with 126 points. She's coming off back-to-back California wins: the Las Virgenes by 1½ lengths in February, then the Santa Anita Oaks by two lengths as the odds-on favorite. McCarthy has pointed her carefully at the Oaks and she arrives with as strong a prep résumé as any filly in the field. Ships east from her West Coast base, which is historically a test for fillies attempting the Oaks.

The Ashland Winner: Percy's Bar

Percy's Bar (Ben Colebrook) sits second in points and enters on the strength of the Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland on April 3, where she beat Todd Pletcher's Zany. The Ashland is historically one of the strongest Oaks preps, and Percy's Bar also has Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies bronze (third) on her résumé from last fall. Colebrook isn't a household-name trainer, which means she may offer slightly more value than her points position suggests.

The Churchill Downs Factor: Bella Ballerina

Bella Ballerina (Brendan Walsh) has something no one else in the field has: a Churchill Downs win in last fall's Golden Rod Stakes (G2). She followed that with a win in the Rachel Alexandra (G2) before finishing second behind Life of Joy in the Fair Grounds Oaks. She has tactical speed that can sit mid-pack or press, which is useful in a 14-horse Oaks. Her fitness at and liking for Churchill Downs is a real advantage on a card where most of the field is running at the track for the first time.

Other Contenders to Watch

  • Counting Stars (Mark Casse): Fantasy Stakes (G2) winner at Oaklawn Park, second in the Honeybee (G3). Casse also has Search Party in the field.
  • Explora (Bob Baffert): Four wins in seven starts, favorite in every one of them. Won the Honeybee, Santa Ynez, and Oak Leaf this cycle. Baffert also has Bottle of Rouge in the probable field.
  • Zany (Todd Pletcher): Demoiselle (G2) and Suncoast winner, runner-up to Percy's Bar in the Ashland. Pletcher's other Oaks runner is She Be Smooth (Davona Dale winner).
  • Prom Queen (Brad Cox): Gulfstream Park Oaks winner. Cox also has Paradise (Busher winner) in the probable field.
  • Always a Runner (Chad Brown): Gazelle (G3) winner at Aqueduct on April 4.
  • My Miss Mo (Saffie Joseph, Jr.): Runner-up in the Davona Dale and Gulfstream Park Oaks, consistent prep campaign.

Trainer Duos

A notable subplot: four different trainers have two confirmed runners in the probable field. Bob Baffert (Explora + Bottle of Rouge), Mark Casse (Counting Stars + Search Party), Todd Pletcher (Zany + She Be Smooth), and Brad Cox (Prom Queen + Paradise) all have two horses pointed at the Oaks. Michael McCarthy, who has favorite Meaning, also has Brooklyn Blonde waiting as an also-eligible. In a 14-horse race, that's an unusual concentration and gives each of those trainers tactical coverage: a front-runner here, a closer there.

Pace Scenario

The Oaks has historically been a race where tactical speed travels better than either pure pace or deep closers. Based on her prep running style, Bella Ballerina has shown a pace-pressing profile and has Churchill Downs experience. Meaning has generally raced near the pace in California. Pure closers look thinner in this year's likely field, which could favor horses that can sit fourth or fifth early and move on the turn.

Why the Oaks Is Worth Your Attention

Three reasons the Oaks tends to play cleaner than the Derby:

  • 14 horses, not 20. Traffic trouble exists but isn't chaotic. Competent fillies with clean trips can actually get them.
  • Most have raced at or near the distance. 1⅛ miles isn't the existential distance question 1¼ is at the Derby.
  • Recreational money flows to the Derby card. The Oaks pool is skewed toward serious bettors, meaning the chalk is more honest and value exists further down the odds board.

If you're playing the Oaks/Derby double or the Oaks Pick 4, the Oaks leg is where disciplined handicapping pays best.
