Two Million Reasons to Love This Weekend: Sovereignty, the Foster, and a Final Goodbye to the Big ASome weekends you circle on the calendar months in advance. This is one of them. Churchill Downs has doubled the purse of its premier summer race to a cool $2 million, and the result is one of the deepest older-horse fields assembled in years. The 45th Stephen Foster goes Saturday as Race 11 with a post time of 6:14 p.m. Eastern, and it is a genuine heavyweight bout. Reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty, last season's Kentucky Derby, Belmont, Jim Dandy, and Travers hero, returns to the track where he conquered the Run for the Roses, installed as the 6-5 morning-line favorite for Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado. If rain hits Louisville as forecast, all the better for a colt who already proved he relishes the slop. But nobody is handing him this one. White Abarrio, the resurgent 7-year-old and 2023 Breeders' Cup Classic winner, already beat Sovereignty by two lengths in April's Oaklawn Handicap and gets the rematch he has been waiting for. That day Sovereignty was out of his element on the lead, so expect him to settle back into his usual stalking trip and unleash a late run. Magnitude arrives glowing off a Dubai World Cup triumph for Steve Asmussen, who would love nothing more than to see this son of Not This Time follow the Gun Runner blueprint on the same Churchill strip. Add Pennsylvania Derby winner Baeza, also from the Mott barn, plus the longshot Willy D's setting the early tempo, and you have a "Win and You're In" qualifier that doubles as the clearest early preview of the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Halloween. Remember, Sovereignty earned his Horse of the Year crown despite missing last year's Classic through illness, which gives this showdown an extra layer of intrigue. Four horses have used this race as a stepping stone to Horse of the Year honors; do not be shocked if a fifth is in Saturday's gate. The Foster anchors a stacked seven-stakes program. The $500,000 Fasig-Tipton Fleur de Lis brings its own star power, with reigning Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint champ Splendora stretching out to a mile and an eighth for Bob Baffert and Flavien Prat, facing 2024 champion juvenile filly Immersive in another Distaff "Win and You're In." On the grass, the $500,000 Wise Dan features the relentless Lagynos, winner of his last four and riding serious momentum for trainer and jockey alike. The $275,000 Bango sends out even-money Cornucopian against the Breeders' Cup Sprint third-place finisher Dr. Venkman, and the American Derby gives Penn Mile winner Alpyland a chance to keep rolling. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. with first post at 12:45. Then comes Sunday, and a moment heavier than any single race. After 132 years, Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens runs its final card before closing forever, as NYRA consolidates downstate racing at a rebuilt Belmont Park opening in September. The Big A gave us Secretariat's debut, Man o' War, Cigar, Kelso, the 1985 Breeders' Cup, and countless gritty winter afternoons that defined New York racing. Every race across closing weekend has been named for a person, horse, or moment from the track's history, and the ninth and final race Sunday, fittingly called the It Was a Good Run, goes off at 5:44 p.m. The first thousand fans through the gate get a commemorative container of dirt from the main track. If you have ever loved this sport, lift a glass to Ozone Park. Back at Churchill, Sunday's closing-day card is no afterthought, offering the sport's first real look at the 2026 juvenile crop. The Bashford Manor and Debutante put freshly minted maiden winners against stakes company for the first time, with the sons and daughters of new sires Life Is Good, Early Voting, and Epicenter announcing themselves. Hey Tuff Guy, a 7 ¾-length debut romper, headlines the colts, while Asmussen chases a sixth Debutante with homebred Epic Reign. The Grade 3 Hanshin and the Maxfield, featuring the return of last year's standout juvenile Brant for Baffert, round out a terrific Sunday. From championship dreams to a heartfelt farewell, this is a weekend to savor. |
