Two Tracks, One Big Saturday: Saratoga's Turf Gems and the Indiana DerbyThe party at Saratoga Race Course is just getting started, and this Saturday, July 11th, the Spa dishes out a pair of Grade 2 turf gems that give handicappers plenty to chew on. But the Spa does not have the weekend to itself. With Del Mar still a week from opening and Woodbine's next graded date on the horizon, the spotlight splits between two tracks: Saratoga up in New York, where the turf features headline, and Horseshoe Indianapolis down in Shelbyville, where the state's biggest dirt card of the year awaits. Grass or dirt, sprint or marathon, there is a compelling field for every kind of handicapper this Saturday. Clear your afternoon. The marquee event is the Bowling Green (G2), a demanding 1 3/8-mile marathon over the inner turf that goes as Race 10 with a post time around 5:39 p.m. Eastern. This one has a delicious international flavor. British raider Fort George, trained by Ed Walker and owned by Mrs. Fitriani Hay, ships in off a winter campaign in Dubai that included a Group 3 score in the Millennium Stakes and a run in the Group 1 Dubai Turf against world-class company. Star jockey Kieran Shoemark makes the transatlantic trip to ride, and given how European stayers have historically thrived in these American turf marathons, he looms as the one to beat. But he will not have it easy. Ole Crazy Bone, a shrewd claim for trainer Mike Maker with Flavien Prat aboard, brings the field's biggest bankroll and a big Kentucky Downs win on his resume, and his tactical speed could prove golden in a race short on early pace. Then there is Carson's Run for the Clement barn with Joel Rosario up, a millionaire trying to recapture the brilliance that carried him to the 2024 Saratoga Derby. Throw in Desvio, Soleil Volant, and stakes debutant Carcano, and you have a puzzle worth studying. Earlier on the card, the Caress (G2) kicks off the stakes action as Race 5, a blistering 5 1/2-furlong sprint down the Mellon turf for fillies and mares, with the six-horse field set to break around 2:47 p.m. Eastern. The buzz surrounds Sunna, unbeaten in four straight starts on grass for trainer Kent Sweezey, a filly whose perfect turf record and career-best figures make her a likely favorite as she chases that elusive graded black type. She will have to fend off a formidable Saffie Joseph Jr. duo in Grade 1-placed In Our Time, who has Flavien Prat back to ride, and closer Movin' On Up, giving the barn two very different running styles to unleash. Italian Soiree adds intrigue too; she is three-for-three lifetime at this exact distance and ran a sharp second in the Intercontinental last out, with Dylan Davis staying aboard. Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen sends out the versatile veteran Zeitlos, the field's leading earner, who has been knocking on the door in this race for years. It is a compact but loaded sprint that could come down to the final jump. The action is not confined to the Spa. Out in Shelbyville, Horseshoe Indianapolis throws its biggest party of the year on that same Saturday, a stakes-packed card headlined by the Grade 3, $300,000 Indiana Derby at 1 1/16 miles for sophomores, with a post time around 6:40 p.m. Eastern. The buzz horse is Leading Change, a Brad Cox-trained son of Gun Runner who romped by 6 1/2 lengths in his Churchill Downs debut and now takes a bold leap straight into graded company with Irad Ortiz Jr. in the irons. Cox has a terrific record in this race, but Leading Change will have to prove the class jump is not too much, too soon. Creole Chrome brings improving form off a win in the Cheval Stakes and looms as a major player. Keep an eye on the overnight scratches, though, as a couple of leading contenders are cross-entered in the Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows the same afternoon and may ship west instead. One race earlier, around 5:55 p.m. Eastern, the Grade 3, $200,000 Indiana Oaks gives the sophomore fillies their turn, rounding out a card loaded with black-type opportunity. Sunday's card lacks a graded feature, so Saturday is unmistakably the main event this weekend. Two Grade 2s, a British invader chasing marathon glory, and a filly sprint stacked with talent make this a can't-miss afternoon at the Spa. Grab your E-Z Win Forms, study the grass, and enjoy the show. |

What Members Are Saying | “Thanks so much for the great Derby tips, which led to me having the winning trifecta x4. What a great way to start me night, but it got even better. I also purchased the card for Penn National that evening as I was going to be at the OTB anyway, and that card had 5 of 9 winners, including a $5205 trifecta! Rest assured I will recommend this site to all of my friends.” — Mick N., Washington, DC |
| “ Mark makes the score of a lifetime in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, a day after making over $100,000 on Friday's Breeders' Cup card. He hit $3000 to Win, $300 Exacta, $50 Trifecta and $25 Superfecta for a grand total of $311,452! His Superfecta ticket represented 40% of the winning tickets! ”— Mark A., Fort Lauderdale, FL |
| “This isn't a testimony, just a from-the-heart thank you. You guys put on a class act. Every time I have had an issue, you resolved it. And thanks to your picks I have had the best month in my racing history. $30,000. Thanks again.” — Michael P., Dallas, TX |
