Horseshoe Indy
Race 11: The $200,000 G3 Indiana Oaks (1 1/16, 5:55pm EST)
#5 Prom Queen. A strong stalker from the Brad Cox barn with Irad Ortiz in the saddle. This daughter of Quality Road cuts back from 1 1/8 and drops down from G1 company. I went back and watched the replays, and if she uncorks a race like the Gulfstream Oaks, she could be very tough to handle in Ortiz's hands.
Race 12: The $300,000 G3 Indiana Derby (1 1/16, 6:40pm EST)
#8 Leading Change. Son of Gun Runner for trainer Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz, teaming up again. He broke his maiden strong at Churchill Downs going 7f. This is a big jump in class, which is why you are seeing 5-1 on the morning line. He should be a bit closer to the pace, and Ortiz will set up shop about two lengths off the lead. Rider and trainer win at a 40% clip as a team, and with racing luck you should see a nice effort.
Saratoga
Race 5: The $250,000 G2 Caress (5 1/2f turf, 2:47pm EST)
#1 Zeitlos. Daughter of Curlin for Steve Asmussen with Jose Ortiz in the saddle. She ran this same prep last year and turned in a big race in the Caress. Go back and you will see a top-shelf effort. Jose gets a great rail spot, wins 23% on the turf, and hits 24% when he gets a leg up from Team Asmussen.
Race 10: The $250,000 G2 Bowling Green (1 3/8 inner turf, 5:39pm EST)
#1 Old Crazy Bone. Son of Ghostzapper for trainer Mike Maker with Flavien Prat getting the call. He has been away for 51 days and should fire fresh with the switch to Prat. He is 12 for 14 ITM on the grass and draws a spot on the hedge. I am looking for them to ride the rail and see where the pace goes: if it is hot, lay off a bit and come running; if nobody comes out swinging, do not be surprised to see Flavien grab the lead and call the shots.
Both tracks offer solid races, and Indy has an incredible undercard with big-name riders making the trip. Grab your E-Z Win Forms and get ready for a big day of racing action.
- Best of luck, Ed.
