Del Mar Picks, Results & Big 'Uns
Del Mar, where "the turf meets the surf" north of San Diego, opened on July 3, 1937, with Bing Crosby greeting fans at the gate. Crosby co-founded the track, and his song "Where the Turf Meets the Surf" still opens and closes every racing day. In 1938 Del Mar hosted the Seabiscuit and Ligaroti match race, the first Thoroughbred race broadcast nationwide on NBC radio.
The summer meet, from mid-July through Labor Day, is the highlight of the West Coast calendar and is built around the Pacific Classic, a 1¼-mile dirt race first run in 1991. Del Mar added a fall meet in 2014, running through November. Its main track was synthetic from 2007 until it returned to dirt in 2014.
Del Mar ran 47 racing days in the past year on dirt and turf. Fields averaged 8.5 starters and races ranged from 5f to 1 1/2m. Claiming races here have averaged a $38,763 tag recently. WinningPonies' picks produced 171 Big 'Un payouts at Del Mar in the past year totaling $73,895, the largest a $20,113 Pick 6 on August 15, 2026. The Double has been the most common winning Big 'Un wager.
