Four Grade 1s, One Whitney, One Wild Saturday

Whitney Day at the Spa: Six Grade 1 Winners, One Starting Gate

Circle Saturday. Saratoga has been building toward August 8th all summer, and Whitney Day has produced a card that would make a Breeders' Cup morning line blush: four Grade 1 races, a $1 million main event, and a field in which six of the eight runners have already won at the top level. First post is 11:45 a.m. Eastern, so pace yourself.

The 99th Whitney goes nine furlongs over the main track at 6:37 p.m., and the winner earns a fees-paid berth into the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on October 31st. Magnitude is the 9-5 morning line favorite from the rail under Jose Ortiz, and Steve Asmussen's four-year-old Not This Time colt has earned every bit of it. He is unbeaten in 2026, taking the Razorback, then the Dubai World Cup over the world-class Forever Young, then the Stephen Foster with a career-best speed rating. Beside him is Sovereignty, last year's Horse of the Year and the winner of the Kentucky Derby, the Belmont and the Travers, still chasing his first score of 2026 after finishing second in the Oaklawn Handicap and third in the Foster. Asked whether his colt has something to prove, Bill Mott did not flinch. Yes, he said. He has to perform.

Then there is Nitrogen. Mark Casse's champion filly is three-for-three at Saratoga and arrives off an Ogden Phipps demolition by nearly 13 lengths that earned her highest speed figure. Only six fillies or mares have won this race in 98 runnings, which tells you exactly how big an ask this is. John Velazquez picks up the mount with Ortiz committed to Magnitude, and if she gets loose on that lead, everyone behind her has a problem. White Abarrio, winner of the 2023 Whitney and the 2024 Breeders' Cup Classic, is 8-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. and Irad Ortiz Jr. Baeza is 7-2 on the far outside for Mott and Flavien Prat, with Antiquarian, Tiztastic and Forged Steel completing the field. The top four from the Stephen Foster are all back for the rematch.

And that is only race 12 on a 14-race card. The $750,000 Fourstardave sends a short field of milers, seven entered though Casse may start only one of his two, a mile on the grass with a Breeders' Cup Mile berth on the line. Deterministic headlines, winner of this race last year and riding a five-race stakes streak that includes the Fort Marcy and the Manhattan. The cutback in distance is the question, and with as many as five runners wanting the front end, closers like Capitol Hill and Lagynos could get the setup of their dreams. The $750,000 Saratoga Derby Invitational offers an immediate rematch of that gorgeous July 4th Belmont Derby photo, where Title Role held off West End Kid by a nose with Remember Mamba a neck away in third. West End Kid ditches the blinkers and picks up Flavien Prat, and European raider Glacius makes his American debut. The winner gets an automatic ticket to the Cox Plate in Australia. In the $500,000 Test, Kentucky Oaks alum Explora is the 5-2 choice for Bob Baffert over seven furlongs.

Sunday keeps the tap open. The Grade 2, $300,000 Troy is a five and a half furlong turf dash where New York-bred Twenty Six Black tries to finally get his graded photo taken, opposed by Doncho, who holds the North American record at the distance. Ellis Park Derby Day stacks six stakes worth $1.5 million, topped by the $400,000 Ellis Park Derby, where Baffert's Plutarch returns from a six-month layoff as the 2-1 favorite. Del Mar counters with the Sorrento for juvenile fillies.

Get the coffee on early. This is the best Saturday of the summer so far, and the Travers is still three weeks away.
