Last Furlong of Keeneland

Keeneland wrapped up its fall meet on the 24th, and now more than ever it is important to look back at how the track was playing. - Churchill opened on the 25th, and the Breeders' Cup returns to Lexington on October 30 and 31. - Paying close attention to how the track was playing helped many handicapping friends the last time the big days were held at Keeneland.

Be aware there are two finish lines. The first one is used for 1 1/16-mile races on the main track, and you will sometimes hear announcer Kurt Becker say, "As they turn into the short stretch." - This can throw many handicappers a curve ball when it's time to pull the trigger. - The turf is lush and drains very well, and the same goes for the main track. Long ago, Keeneland used to be a speed oval where front runners were tough to gun down. Today it plays very fair overall, and this should be one of the best Breeders' Cups to enjoy.

The pools will be swelled and ripe for the winning. - Many times, we find ourselves getting caught up in wagers we normally don't play. Be sure to play exactas and daily doubles. Always good value. Don't be afraid to start up a nice place parlay, either. You will be surprised at the payoffs. - Exactas carry a $1 minimum, trifectas 50 cents, and superfectas 10 cents. - Pick 3s are a $1 minimum, and Pick 4s and Pick 5s are 50 cents. The Pick 6 is a $1 minimum. Great value to be had on the marquee days!

If you go to the races and are new to Keeneland, take a walk around, as history oozes from every corner. The paddock is incredible, and there is not a bad seat in the house. - If you will be playing from home, there are plenty of top-shelf handicappers on deck to illuminate the races, who looks good on the track, and which favorites are vulnerable. TV coverage, post times, and the wagering menu can be found on the Breeders' Cup site.

This weekend is always tops on my list, and for the first time all college football season, games will not be watched until the races are over! - I put in a bunch of time watching morning works, reading the latest, and watching the weather report. Then, after the draw, the handicapping begins. Put in your time, keep up on the latest, and kick back and enjoy the weekend!

Best of luck, Ed.
