Breeders' Cup Picks & Handicapping

Breeders' Cup Picks & Handicapping

Handicapping for all 14 Breeders' Cup races at Keeneland, plus the top-tier exactas our forms caught in past Breeders' Cups.

Breeders' Cup Picks & Handicapping

The Breeders' Cup packs 14 Grade 1 races into two days, and every one of them is a championship. Juveniles with only a few starts, European turf stars shipping in, and sprinters and stayers on two surfaces make it the hardest weekend of the year to handicap. This is where we share how we approach it, and what our subscribers get inside our Breeders' Cup E-Z Win® Forms.

The two days feature 14 Grade 1 races and more than $34 million in purses and awards, headlined by the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday at 6:16 PM Eastern.

How We Handicap the Breeders' Cup

Our E-Z Win® Forms apply the same method to the Breeders' Cup that we use on every race at every track we cover. There's no special "Breeders' Cup system." What it weighs:

  • Speed ratings calibrated to each track, surface and distance, and adjusted for how fast the track was playing that day
  • Class and performance in one figure, on turf as well as dirt, so a horse moving up or down in company is rated on both
  • Track-to-track comparisons built from the same horses running at different tracks, so form from a strong meet isn't discounted
  • Surface switches: a horse trying turf for the first time is rated from its pedigree, so a turf-bred juvenile with only dirt starts isn't written off
  • Tiering: every runner is grouped into tiers so you can see at a glance which horses are live and which are pretenders

Our Horstradamus® rating engine was upgraded this month. In backtesting across six years of races at Keeneland, the upgraded engine picked the winner on top nearly 30% more often than before. In the same backtesting, across graded stakes at every track, it picked the winner on top more than 15% more often. Read about the upgrade.

The ratings aren't market odds. The point is to find value, not to rubber-stamp the favorite.

Our Track Record

We don't hit every Breeders' Cup race. No handicapper does. But when the form reads right, our tiers catch the big exotics.

2019 Breeders' Cup Saturday Pick 6:

Our tiers covered all six legs of Saturday's late Pick 6, from the Filly & Mare Turf through the Classic. The $1 Pick 6 paid $55,668.80. The same day, the $1 late Pick 5 paid $1,783.30 and a 50¢ Pick 4 paid $1,156.25.

2024 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint:

Soul of an Angel (our #3) beat Society (our #2), an exacta from our top tier. The 50¢ Super High Five paid $11,343.85, with the $1 exacta at $106.40 and the 50¢ trifecta at $721.80.

2014 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint:

Our top pick Bobby's Kitten won, with our #3 No Nay Never second. The $1 superfecta paid $9,530.90, and the $1 trifecta paid $647.00.

Why the Breeders' Cup Is So Hard to Handicap

  • Fourteen championships in two days. Every race is a Grade 1, so there are no soft spots on the card to build a ticket around.
  • Juveniles with little form. Friday's 2-year-olds have only a handful of starts, and some are trying turf or a two-turn route for the first time.
  • Europe on the turf. Top European horses ship in for the turf races, often with form that's hard to line up against American figures.
  • Sprints to marathons, dirt and turf. The races range from 5½ furlongs to 1½ miles, split between the dirt and turf courses.

That's why no single number tells the whole story here. Our forms weigh many factors at once and sum them up in tiers you can read at a glance.
