Box, Key and Wheel Bets Explained

Box

Your horses can finish in any order. Cost is the base bet times the number of orders: n × (n − 1) for an exacta, n × (n − 1) × (n − 2) for a trifecta. A $1 trifecta box with 4 horses is 24 combinations, or $24.00.

Key Wheel

Your key horse has to win, and the horses you use with it fill the other spots in any order. A $1 trifecta key wheel with 4 horses under the key is 12 combinations, or $12.00. It costs far less than a box because the key is only used on top.

Key Box

Your key horse can finish in any of the paid spots, with the other horses filling the rest. The same trifecta with the key in any position is 36 combinations, or $36.00: three times the key wheel, one for each spot the key can take.

Part Wheel

Pick different horses for each position, such as 1 and 2 to win, 1, 2 and 3 for second, and 1 through 4 for third. Combinations that use the same horse twice don’t count, so that $1 trifecta is 8 combinations, or $8.00. In the calculator, choose Straight and pick several horses in each position.

Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5 and Pick 6

Multiply the number of horses you use in each race, then multiply by the base bet. A 50¢ Pick 4 using 2, 3, 1 and 4 horses is 2 × 3 × 1 × 4 = 24 combinations, or $12.00.

Build Smarter Multi-Race Tickets

Daily Doubles, Pick 3s, Pick 4s, and Pick 6s require covering the right combinations without blowing your budget. The Spread Ticket builder lets you classify horses into A (top picks), B (contenders), and C (longshots) tiers for each leg, then set multipliers to control how many tickets are generated at each coverage level. The result is an optimized set of tickets that concentrates your money on the most likely outcomes while still covering enough to catch a price.

The E-Z Win® Calculator: Your Horses, Already Loaded

Open the calculator from an E-Z Win® Form and it pulls horse names and tier ratings directly from the race card. The Big ’Un button auto-fills selections based on our handicapping tiers, and Auto-Load classifies horses into A/B/C for spread tickets using your E-Z Win® ratings. You can also copy generated tickets directly into your race notes. The E-Z Win® Calculator is included with Clubhouse and Winner’s Circle, and you can try it free 10 times on any form you buy.

Calculator FAQ

Costs, wager types, and strategies for using the calculator.

Our Betting Calculator is free for everyone, no account needed, and has two tools in one:

  • Cost Calculator: Instantly shows the dollar cost of any exotic wager (Exacta, Trifecta, Superfecta, Super High 5) with support for Straight, Box, Key Box, and Key Wheel strategies. Pick your horses, set a base bet, and see the total before you commit.
  • Spread Tickets: Builds optimized multi-race tickets (Daily Double through Pick 6). Classify horses in each leg as A (top picks), B (contenders), or C (longshots), set multipliers to control coverage depth, and it generates a ticket set that concentrates your money on the most likely outcomes while still covering enough to catch a price.

Opened from an E-Z Win® Form, it becomes the E-Z Win® Calculator: horse names and tier ratings load from the race card, with no retyping needed. That version is included with Clubhouse and Winner's Circle, and you can try it free 10 times on any form you buy.

A Trifecta requires picking the first three finishers in exact order. A Box covers every possible ordering of the horses you select, so the cost is the base bet multiplied by the number of permutations:

  • 3-horse $1 Trifecta Box: 6 combinations = $6
  • 4-horse $1 Trifecta Box: 24 combinations = $24
  • 5-horse $1 Trifecta Box: 60 combinations = $60
  • 6-horse $1 Trifecta Box: 120 combinations = $120

Most tracks offer a $0.50 base bet, which halves these numbers (a 4-horse Trifecta Box at $0.50 base is $12). The Cost Calculator shows the total instantly for any base bet and horse count.

The general formula: cost = base bet × n × (n − 1) × (n − 2) where n is the number of horses in the box.

Both are ways to cover multiple horses in an exotic wager, but they make very different bets:

  • Box: All horses you pick can finish in any of the covered positions. A 4-horse Trifecta Box pays if any 3 of your 4 horses finish 1-2-3 in any order. Wide coverage, higher cost.
  • Key: Your key horse must finish in one specific position (typically the win spot), and other horses fill the remaining positions. A 1-horse Key Trifecta with 4 backup horses pays only if your key wins and any 2 of your backups finish 2nd and 3rd. Cheaper than a Box but you have to be right about the winner.
  • Key Box: Your key horse must finish in any of the covered positions (not just 1st), and other horses fill the rest. A middle ground between Box and Key.
  • Wheel: Your key horse with “all” other horses in the field for the remaining positions. The widest (and most expensive) version of a Key.

The Cost Calculator supports all four strategies side by side so you can compare the cost of each approach before deciding.

The cost of an exotic wager is your base bet multiplied by the number of combinations the bet covers. Combinations depend on the wager type and how many horses you select:

  • Exacta Box (1st-2nd): n × (n − 1) combinations
  • Trifecta Box (1st-3rd): n × (n − 1) × (n − 2)
  • Superfecta Box (1st-4th): n × (n − 1) × (n − 2) × (n − 3)
  • Super High 5 Box (1st-5th): n × (n − 1) × (n − 2) × (n − 3) × (n − 4)

Multi-race wagers (Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, Pick 6) multiply the number of horses across each leg. A Pick 4 with 3-2-4-2 horses across the four legs is 3 × 2 × 4 × 2 = 48 combinations.

Minimum base bets vary by wager type and track: most exactas and trifectas allow $0.50 or $1, superfectas often allow $0.10, and Pick 4/5/6 wagers usually allow $0.50 or $1. The Cost Calculator handles all of these automatically.

For a definition of each wager type and how the payouts work, see our guide to horse racing wager types.

A Superfecta requires picking the first four finishers in exact order. A Superfecta Box covers every ordering of the horses you select:

  • 4-horse Superfecta Box: 24 combinations
  • 5-horse Superfecta Box: 120 combinations
  • 6-horse Superfecta Box: 360 combinations
  • 7-horse Superfecta Box: 840 combinations
  • 8-horse Superfecta Box: 1,680 combinations

Most tracks offer a $0.10 minimum on Superfectas, so a 4-horse box is $2.40 and a 6-horse box is $36. Costs scale fast, which is why Key Box and Key Wheel strategies are popular alternatives for spreading without breaking the budget.

The general formula: combinations = n × (n − 1) × (n − 2) × (n − 3) where n is the number of horses in the box.

Multi-race wagers are where the tier system really shines. The general strategy is to use fewer horses in races with a clear top tier and spread wider in competitive races:

  • Races with 1-2 Tier 1 horses: These are your “singles” or “A” legs. Use just the top-tier horse(s) to keep ticket cost down.
  • Wide-open races (3+ in Tier 1, or Tier 1 and 2 close together): Spread to include Tier 1 and Tier 2 horses. These are your “spread” legs.
  • Consider a Tier 3 or 4 “bomb”: In one or two legs, adding a longer shot at a price can turn a modest payout into a huge one.

The free Spread Tickets calculator builds the ticket for you: classify horses into A (top picks), B (contenders), and C (longshots) for each leg, set multipliers to control coverage, and it generates an optimized set of tickets that concentrates your money on the most likely outcomes while still covering enough to catch a price. Clubhouse and Winner's Circle members can open it from the E-Z Win® Form, where Auto-Load sorts every leg into A, B and C from our tiers.
