Build your Derby bankroll this weekend. Saturday is the post draw for the 152nd Kentucky Derby. | Our Exotic Predictions Have Paid | |
The Last Pit Stop Before Derby DayWe are seven days out from the 152nd Kentucky Derby, which means this is the last weekend to sharpen your form, refill your bankroll, and lock in your Derby Day strategy before Saturday, May 2nd at Churchill Downs. The single biggest event between today and Derby Day is the post position draw, which happens this Saturday, April 25th at approximately 2:15 PM Eastern at Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Oaks draws alongside the Derby in the same ceremony. That afternoon is when the field becomes real. Until the gates are assigned, every projection you read is built on the morning line and assumed running styles. Once the draw lands, the entire pace scenario gets concrete, the favorites' odds tighten or drift, and serious bankroll decisions get made on the back of those numbers. If you only watch one piece of news this week, watch the draw on Saturday afternoon. To see the current points standings and the prep races that built each filly's case for the gate, our Kentucky Oaks prep races page tracks the full road. What this weekend gives you is a live look at the Churchill main track itself. Saturday is opening day of the 152nd Spring Meet, and Sunday April 26th is the first Derby-Week Sunday card Churchill has run since 2010, an extra day of racing that doesn't normally exist. Together they're your only chance to read the Derby surface in race conditions before Derby Day. Watch the track bias closely. Is the rail playing fast or dead? Are closers actually getting through, or is speed holding wire to wire? How are jockeys positioning out of the gate? None of those questions get answered for you once the 20-horse Derby field loads. Whatever you take from Saturday and Sunday at Churchill is the freshest read on the main track anyone will have on May 2nd. The Derby itself shapes up around three of the biggest macro stories in recent memory. Brad Cox holds three of the top five spots in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points standings: Commandment, Further Ado, and Fulleffort. Cox having that kind of representation in a single Derby is genuinely rare. The market favorite, however, is Todd Pletcher's Renegade off back-to-back wins in the Sam F. Davis and the Arkansas Derby. Above all of that sits the Irad Ortiz decision: Ortiz rode all four of those horses to wins in their Derby preps, and he can only ride one on May 2nd. Whichever horse he picks reshapes the betting board, the pace projection, and the storyline going into the gate. Watch for that announcement during the week. The full points standings and a complete prep race recap with replays are on our Kentucky Derby prep races page. The Mott family adds a quieter but compelling layer. Bill Mott, who won last year's Derby with Sovereignty, has Chief Wallabee pointed at Churchill Downs. His son, Riley Mott, has two horses in the probable field in Albus and Incredibolt. The first father-son Derby matchup in over six decades. Whatever you do over the next seven days, do it with sharp eyes and a clear plan. The form is set. The story is loaded. Use the weekend to build the bankroll, watch Saturday's draw, and be ready when the gates open Saturday May 2nd. |
