What You'll Find Here

Our blog's free picks tag collects every selection post the WinningPonies team and our contributing handicappers publish. Coverage leans toward the races bettors actually want opinions on:

  • Triple Crown weekends. Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes, including the prep-race trail leading into each.
  • Breeders' Cup. Pre-race analysis and selections for the World Championships every November.
  • Major stakes days. Pegasus World Cup, Saudi Cup, Dubai World Cup, Travers, Whitney, Pacific Classic, and the Grade 1 cards that anchor the year.
  • Value cards. Turfway Park winter meets, Keeneland spring and fall, and other circuits where smaller fields and softer pools reward patient handicapping.

Each post breaks down the contenders, identifies live longshots, flags the horses to beat, and lays out the wagers that make sense given the likely pool sizes and morning-line prices.

How Our Free Picks Differ from the E-Z Win Form

The free picks on our blog are opinion pieces by individual handicappers, written in long-form prose with the reasoning explained. They cover a handful of races on a featured card.

The E-Z Win Form is our subscription product: a structured handicapping form covering every race at every track we follow, every day. It uses our proprietary rating system rather than one analyst's view, and it's the tool the WinningPonies team uses to build their own bets. The form delivers ratings and tier rankings, not specific bet recommendations. Pair it with the Calculator to size and build wagers from the ratings, or use them as inputs to your own handicapping process.

If you like the reasoning style of our free picks and want the same analytical horsepower applied to the rest of the card, the sample form is the place to start.

Tip

Want every race covered, not just the stakes? Check out the free sample E-Z Win Form. It's a recent complete card.

How to Use Free Picks Profitably

A few things worth keeping in mind when betting off any free selections, ours or anyone else's:

  1. Check the morning line before you wager. A "top pick" at 8-1 is a different bet than the same horse at 8-5. The post-time odds matter as much as the selection.
  2. Consider the wager, not just the winner. Most of our free picks include a recommended ticket structure (exacta box, trifecta key, pick-3 spread). The bet construction often matters more than identifying the winner.
  3. Don't bet what you can't afford. Free picks are opinions, not guarantees. Bankroll discipline applies regardless of source.
